Enhancing Participation and Performance

The Importance of Certified Coaches in Enhancing Participation and Performance

(by Equine Canada)

The Equine Canada Coaching programs are designed to provide coaches/instructors with the tool necessary to improve athlete development.  Whether it is certification programs, clinics, mentorship or high performance, ultimately the goal is to provide the equestrian with the best possible experience and skills.  By entering the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) coaches continually build on their training and certification by joining coaches/instructors, mentoring, or participating in specialty courses offered in their region or nationally. Next to parents a coach can be one of the most influential people in creating a positive experience for your child in the sport of equestrian.  Thus to help ensure that your child has a positive experience please find below the top ten things you as a parent should know about your child’s coach.

  1. Is certified through Equine Canada under the Coaching Association of Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)

  2. Holds a valid First Aid Certificate

  3. Encourages all participants

  4. Has valid Insurance Coverage

  5. Ensures everyone is having fun

  6. Focuses on teaching the fundamentals and is not focused100% on winning

  7. Knows the equestrian discipline you are developing skills in and is prepared for lessons

  8. Communicates clearly with participants, parents, and officials

  9. Gives specific instruction to your child to ensure that he/she understands

  10. Talk to the coach/instructor first
