Summer Camps

West Wind Stables offers summer camps for all levels of riders, male or female. Campers should bring enthusiasm and willingness to try new things!

West Wind also welcomes returning campers!  These campers will be grouped according to previous experience - please make sure to mark this on your registration form!  We modify the activities from year to year to keep campers involved in learning what it takes to care for horses.

Camps are run by Equestrian Canada certified Instructors and Coaches. All activities will be tailored to the ability levels of the campers at the coach’s discretion.

All camps run Monday - Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm unless otherwise noted.

Beginner/Novice 1 Camp

This camp offers one ride per day. Ages 8-16 (riders must be 8 when camp occurs).  No horse experience necessary; campers with some previous experience on trail rides or summer camps are welcome and will be grouped accordingly. Campers will learn safety and horse handling, grooming and saddling.

Each day includes a one hour lesson, learning the basics of steering, stopping, walking, and building up to trotting.  The other half of the day campers will make new friends and play games with the horses!

Novice 2 Camp

This camp offers one ride per day. Ages 8-16 (riders must be 8 when camp occurs).  Campers with some previous experience of riding lessons, or a few weeks of summer camp in recent years are welcome and will be grouped accordingly.  Campers should also have a comfort level of working around the horses safely on the ground, preparing their horse to ride, and able to work independently.

Each day of camp includes a one hour lesson improving and solidifying current skills such as steering, stopping, walking, 2 point and posting trot, building up to canter. Cantering is not guaranteed and is dependent upon individual campers balance and competency of the skills mentioned above.

Advanced Camp

This camp offers two rides per day.  Ages 13 and up. SKILLS NEEDED: campers must already be able to catch, groom, saddle, and bridle without supervision and comfortably control a canter.

The riding activities will include jumping and dressage work.  With one afternoon being spent at a local horse show to learn where their future riding can take them (dependent on show schedule).  Other activities include learning about stable management, first aid, nutrition, bandaging and jump course designing.  This week is geared to riders with some miles in the saddle.
